authors for a spiritual home

from Andreas Helle

„Heimat“: an airy notion that links a fuzzy past with an ideal future in the vague territories of Here and Us. A spiritual homeland is more than a place, more than the merely familiar and much more than a feeling. This „Heimat“ includes longing, knowing, hoping, including and excluding. Any attempt to look for something tangible in this term will end up lost in the cultural haze. „Heimat“ anchors in different ages. We will never reach it, but we can feel it and sense it.

Landscape: another vague concept in which Gestalt and mere space melt into something that includes geography, geology, fauna, flora, language, History, stories, peculiarities and human culture. The camera follows two individuals who bring cultural life to the area with the Theater am Rand in Zollbrücke and the Oderbruchmuseum in Altranft. There the protagonists create cultural events in the cultured landscape of the Oderbruch. This opens up space for exploration: what does this deserted Oderbruch mean for those who live there? Is there more to it than not being a city? In Altranft and Zollbrücke, what is one‘s own gets culturally appropriated. The landscape is conceptualized and thus formed into a spiritual home – „Heimat“.
